As a refugee from Ukraine, do I have the right to work in Åland?

Yes, the European Union has activated the Temporary Protection Directive. This means that persons from Ukraine will be offered temporary residence in Åland. You can apply for this at Ålands polismyndighet

You have the right to work in Åland as soon as your register your application with the police. The police will provide you with a printed certificate proving your right to work (you no longer need to wait for the temporary residence permit).

If you need support in finding work in Åland, register with us at AMS, Ålands arbetsmarknads- och studieservicemyndighet (Åland Public Employment Service).

How do I register?

You can register at AMS by visiting us at our office in Nygatan 5, Mariehamn (open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 10-12).
For this you need to bring your decision on temporary residence permit that you received from the Finnish Immigration with you (we cannot register you as a job seeker without it).
You can also fill out the form for registration as a job seeker and return it to us, either via email or in our mailbox outside our door.
We also have the form outside our office on the second floor.
Note, it is important that you:
- attach a copy/photo of your decision on temporary residence permit that you received from the Finnish Immigration, both front and back
- sign the form

What happens after I am registered at AMS?

Once you are registered as a job seeker, you will get your own contact person. Your contact person will get back to you and arrange a meeting to discuss your job search and what support you can get from us (an interpreter can be provided if needed).
